EPILOGUE…

Posted: March 1, 2010 in My life at xime...

It is said that everything that has a beginning has an end…

The past is dead and gone. My life at XIME is a history now. But it did hand over a key to me… a key to the door of another world.

When I opened it, I saw nothing but a deep and dark forest with no sign boards or trails to follow. I looked back, nervously… No, there was no turning back! The road that had taken me there had long gone and disappeared.

I stood petrified in that virgin forest. A thin breeze of fear and anxiety washed over me! What should I do? Where should I begin? Whom should I seek assistance? The anxiety and fear in me then turned into anger blended with hopelessness!

I shouted desperately at the woods and stamped hard on the ground… But there was no answer.

No! Miracles won’t happen. I gnashed my teeth. I have to walk this alone. I have to find the way myself… but!

The fear in me again seized control over me!

…but where would this lead me to? Would I find my way out?

While I stood there battling these thoughts, the environment changed without any warning! A cold breeze passed by waking me up from my anxieties…

Only time could tell you that… You just believe in yourself and walk without fear… The woods whispered… for the only time!

I wasn’t sure whether it was the woods or just a feeling. But it did inject a fresh life into me. I looked at the woods confidently. Yes, this is my life and this is my journey. I have to walk this, myself.

Determinedly I set my foot ahead… I didn’t know what time had in its store for me. I didn’t know where it led to. But I knew this much:

If I find my way out, I’ll become a legend one day; else I’ll die like a common man…

My journey in quest of glory begins here….

Some believed they had never seen a batch as fantastic as the 13th one, while others carped that they had never seen any worse. People shared different opinions! But, if you ask him about his personal opinion, he would say that the 13th batch was neither better nor worse than any other batches before or after it. If anyone had a different opinion, it was just because they had either under or over rated the other batches…

But the 13th batch was special and unique in a way, because of the tragedies it bore… Like all other batches, it started off with high flying dreams and energy. It had everything a batch wanted: talent, achievements, passion, glamour, romance, adventure, good times, bad times… everything. But at the end, it went down… silently… just like the legendary ship ‘Titanic’.

Some managed to find a place in the rescue boat, but others? They simply drowned; with all their dreams and hopes clutched close to their heart. The dawn was dark and cold then… and the evil fate stood tall at a distance, wearing a callous sneer on its face!

The old giants on the shore with big name tags could do nothing to help them, but just watch them drown. But yes, they had heard the whimpers and screams of the victims; they had seen the look of helplessness in their tiny eyes; and they had sensed that they were too young and inexperienced to face the brutal fate alone.  Yet, they stood like stone sculptures; close to the evil fate!

As time went by, everything became history…

The world might forget it. The ‘giants’ might try to bury it deep inside their hearts. But… but will the victims ever be able to forgive or forget it? He doubted.

***

Even though he started hesitantly, he did a ‘decent’ job as a placement coordinator. It wasn’t an easy task for him as he was steering the reins against the raging storm! Many promises and words of inspiration gushed into that chaotic world… even from the ‘giants’. But all those promises remained empty forever!

He tried; yet couldn’t steer the ship to the shore. But he stood tall, till the last moment… like a lighted candle spreading a radiance of hope.

***

One evening as he locked the placement room and turned to walk, he saw Prof. EG standing with Pakru and Kadavanthara in the corridor. It was evident from their faces that they were discussing something serious. As he walked towards them, the professor looked at him.

“Amal, its time… It’s official now! June 10th

He didn’t say anything. He knew that it was coming. He looked at his friends. Silence reigned…

On June 9th Pakru, Kadavanthara and he stepped down the XIME stairs with their baggage. An unusual stillness bloated the atmosphere that time. The tranquility she wore then was quite contradicting to her true nature…

Strange! He smirked. After all, he had never felt that he was staying in the XIME hostel those days. It was like an abandoned kingdom, once gloried with happiness, life and hope!!!

As he walked through the corridor on that day, several thoughts flashed through his mind: the selection process, the ‘unexpected XIME phone call’, the day he had come with his father to pay the fees, the first week at college, the hostel ragging, friends, classes, CGPA, the tour, the party nights, the last few days… Everything then flashed through his mind like a dream!

Yes, life is a climb… There will always be stumbling blocks or dead ends to face, to overcome, to conquer. There will always be some mysteries to solve. There will always be uncertainties to deal with!!

But… but when will this stop? Won’t my life be free of uncertainties? His young mind raced for answers…

The XIME garden and the lovely flowers in it stood there in stunned silence… He was their favourite and customary photographer who had never failed to capture their beauty when they were ready…

The XIME gate opened with a frail, creaking voice…

No, uncertainties will never spare you; but that’s the beauty of the life… A mysterious smile blossomed on his lips.

As the gate silently closed behind him, he turned and spared one last look at the building… ‘Farewell XIME

Epilogue:

https://lapillus.wordpress.com/2010/03/01/epilogue/

Warton Groceries was a small grocery shop. As he entered, he saw an old man standing in the counter. He seemed to be the one who was managing the shop.

He was searching for something on his desk…

At that moment an old woman walked to the counter with a basket in her hand. She was the only customer there then.

“Done with the shopping, Ms. Booth?” the old man in the counter enquired as she placed the basket on his desk.

“Well, enough for the week Vincent. Can you make it fast? I have to be at church before 9 a.m.”

“No problem Ms. Booth. Just a couple of minutes”

He took the items one by one and scanned it against a small box which looked like an audio cassette cover. As he finished doing that a small machine near the counter sprang to life. He pulled out a small slip from that and handed it over to the old lady.

“Here is your bill Ms. Booth.”

She collected that and glanced through.

“Now please pass me your CCN” Vincent requested.

“C5P9M1”

“Alright” he said as he entered those digits into his cassette looking instrument. “Now Ms. Booth, please authorize the payment”

As Kevin looked she raised her forearm and pressed her index finger against it. Suddenly a small red screen emerged from nowhere in front of her. She pressed some digits and waved her hands. That’s it!! The screen is gone!!!

Kevin stood dumbfounded!

“Thank you Ms. Booth and have a lovely Sunday.”

“You too Vincent. Good day” With that she walked out of the store.

Kevin stared at the ‘cassette like thing’ in the grocery shop owner’s hand.

“You looking for something, son?” Vincent now turned to Kevin and inquired.

That question broke Kevin from his thoughts… He smiled and walked close to the grocery owner.

“Good morning. Well, I was wondering why the whole place seems so deserted. I didn’t see anyone in the street.”

The old man shot back a sharp look at Kevin. “You are not from this place, eh?”

Kevin just nodded. Ya, I don’t belong to this crazy world… no way! He said to himself…

“Well, that explains. Today is St. Rockon’s day. Everyone would be in the church.”

St. Rockon! Who the hell is that? Kevin wondered. But he didn’t feel like asking him…

“Then why aren’t you in church?”

“See kid. I know that he was a great man… but I don’t believe in all these stuff. Besides, I have my business to attend to.”

“And who exactly, did you say, is this St. Rockon?” Kevin finally asked him.

“You are a doctor. Aren’t you? These days schools teach nothing but shit! What a pity” the old man spat on the floor angrily. “I can’t imagine a educated person like you asking such a stupid question.”

Kevin suddenly felt the mistake he made. “You see, I am from a far away land. I am from Bangalore, India. May be that’s why I haven’t heard about him”

“I am sorry. What bank you said?”

“No! It’s not bank. It’s Bangalore.”

The old man frowned. “Look kid, I have no idea what place you are talking about. Besides, I don’t have time for all these. What do you want to buy from here?”

Kevin didn’t feel like talking to him anymore. Let’s get straight to the business then…

“You have a land phone or mobile phone here?”

“What! What phone?”

“Mobile or Land phone…”

“What are those? I have never heard anything of that sort?”

Is he playing fool on me! He is using all modern stuff here for scanning and billing and he doesn’t know what a mobile phone is?

“Look Vincent, I don’t have time to play around with you. Besides, I am the president of United States and you better understand that.”

The old man was baffled. He never thought of meeting a lunatic so early on a weekend! At first, this dumbo said something about some bank and now says he is the president of some states! He must be a prank… Its better I get rid of him immediately.

The grocery owner went under his counter. When he emerged again there was a small gun like thing on his hand.

“Get out from here, you dirty imp” he barked pointing his weapon towards Kevin. “Else I will have you electrified!”

Electrified!!! Kevin wondered. But he knew that the old man had something dangerous in his hand.

“Relax… take it easy, man… I am leaving… Its fine” He held his hand upward and moved towards the door. The old man was still pointing his weapon on him. As he walked out he checked the time on big wall clock.

8 a.m.  he read… Kevin slowly walked out.

Dr. Moxon knotted his tie up and combed his hair. He looked at his reflection on the mirror… His eyes were puffy and tired. The wrinkles on his face were visible…

He kept the comb on the table and walked towards the kitchen. The maid handed over a glass of orange juice…

Dr. Moxon was in his early sixties… but was a mountain of a man – tall and strong.

He was not keen in the project at the beginning. He had enjoyed teaching ‘Advanced Medical Science’ at Norwin School of Medical Science, the world famous Medical school. In fact, a dream school for anyone in the planet who dreamed of pursuing a career in Medical Science.

Besides, he was a famed professor in the field of Advanced MS and his works were worshipped by millions… He was enjoying his ‘blessed life’. That was the time when the vice president approached him with a project called ‘Laser Tears’… Since it came from the top authority, he couldn’t refuse it.

Soon he formed a team and started working on the project… The pressure from vise president was enormous… Moxon never liked or appreciated anyone poking into his business… yet! That was 15 years ago…

Operation ‘Laser Tears’ was a complete failure. Moxon had tried his level best… yet he couldn’t take it anywhere. Eight years later the Vice president briefed him again on the necessity of the successful completion of the project… Moxon, employed few more members and worked harder towards the goal…

But things took a toll five years ago when Dr. Moxon’s ‘personal’ world changed all of a sudden…

The vice president was completely furious with Moxon by then. He called him to his office one day and there was a row of arguments over the project and Moxon’s ability to handle that project.

Even Dr. Moxon was very upset by then – he had spent ten long years on a project and yet there was no luck! Besides, he was no longer enjoying his teaching life… His personal life was all chaos… He never had time for anything but for that damn project… Yet he knew nothing about the ‘real’ project. He was kept in dark…

He found himself shouting at the Vice president on that day. He let away his feelings… He was angry that he was never told the actual purpose of the project before.

That was too much for the vice president. He felt that Moxon had crossed his limits. He never thought that he would let away the true secrets behind the Operation ‘Laser Tears’ to a common man like Dr. Moxon… But in that frail moment he opened up like a volcano…

When the doctor heard about the real motive behind the project, he decided to quit. He sent an official resignation letter to Vice President. He even dismissed the members in that project…

Technically, the project was declared ‘terminated’…

But everything changed in two days… That event that changed Dr. Moxon’s life forever… From that day onwards he had lived to take revenge… revenge on her!!! But the only way to get to them was through ‘Laser Tears’… He knew that…

The next day, he called up president and informed him of his will to continue the project… But what he said still rang in his ears…

“You are a pain in my ass. I was a fool to get charmed by your degrees and recognitions. I thought you were a genius. But, you are nothing… but a prank who makes a living just by fooling people around. Now just disappear… I’ll have it done by a real genius…”

Dr. Moxon crushed the glass in his hand… There was a loud crackling noise. The maid came running to him to nurse him. But he waved her away… He looked at the fresh blood oozing out of his palm…

Four and half years had passed… The vice president had become the president now…

The human side in Dr. Moxon was dead long time ago. The only thing that he thought about was revenge… and nothing else….

He didn’t want to revenge him, but her… the one who betrayed him! And then he wanted to pay the then vice president back for the humiliation he suffered on that day. He knew that nothing would stop him from that…

This is my day… I’ll soon have my vengeance…

Now he was at the brink of success… All he needed was to wait for few more days…

After that I’ll tear him and her apart…

He washed his hands with ice and walked to the door checking time in his wrist watch… It was 7.30 a.m.

Just when he stepped out, he received a message…

It was from Dr. Green!!!

Kevin was flabbergasted by the look of that city… He had never seen such a wonderful place anywhere else in the planet! Each and everything in there was different… At first, it appeared like some fantasy world to him!

He studied the surroundings carefully… but froze on his steps when he suddenly noticed that the roads there were perfectly smooth and frictionless! Besides, the vehicles which passed by that road had no tyres!!! It appeared as if they were floating on the roads…

Kevin stood there, awestruck, like a small kid who saw Disney land for the first time…

But even after being there for a ‘considerably’ long time, he didn’t see a bike or a car or a bus or anything of that sort. All the vehicles that passed through that place appeared like some big fancy toys to him…

Suddenly he noticed that the footpath, on which he was standing, was moving. It was taking him forward and he had not realized it till then!

There were 2 foot tracks in there. One was moving in one direction and other, in the opposite direction.  The third track, however, was still. Must be for those who prefer not to use this ‘thing’ he thought.

Kevin moved along with that… enjoying the alien city!

He had never heard or even read about such a city anywhere, even after being the most powerful president of the world! It was hard for him to believe that such a city existed on earth…

At some point he even wondered whether he was dead!

Am I in some eternal world? But this couldn’t be a heaven or hell? One part of his brain said to him…

How do you know for sure Kevin? Have you been in heaven or hell before! The other part murmured.

He had hard time controlling those bizarre thoughts…

But a sudden sound pulled him back from those thoughts… He looked around… It came from big screen that was placed on the other side of the road… It was displaying an advertisement… About a diet breakfast item…

But the screen vanished as the advertisement was over! Kevin wheeled in confusion… But he knew that the screen was gone.

He was getting used to that world… He realized that there was something mysterious about the place. And he accepted the fact, to himself, that he knew nothing about that city despite being the most powerful person in the universe…

But he was learning… gradually.

There should be something magical about this place… Whatever it is, I would find that out soon. He was determined.

As he moved forward, he realized that all the buildings around him were tall and big… There wasn’t even a single small building! Besides, those buildings were closely packed to each other… He wondered whether all the people there were living in flats!

May be, they just ran out of place for each and every one!!! He thought.

As the moving ‘foot track’ took him forward, he became conscious about something strange… He had not seen even a single human being there on that foot track yet…

***

Kevin, again, reminded himself of the real reason why he was standing there… He had to find the way back to home… to the White House… And all what he wanted then was to find a telephone booth.

But it seemed that there was not even a single one anywhere! Besides, he had not seen even a single human being there.

Alright then! Let me find some shop and use their phone…

***

Warton Groceries…  Kevin read the name of the grocery shop.

All he needed was to call his agents or associates… He knew that they would take care of the rest.

They will track the phone and be here in minutes… He smiled… for the first time, after that accident…

Thirty minutes later Kevin was standing at cross roads… It occurred to him that he was passing through a forest! It was still dark out there.

It must be around six’o clock now, I guess. He took a deep breath and continued walking straight, ignoring the other paths…

***

Dr. Green walked lazily to the coffee machine studying the report which Lyn had left on his table while he was sleeping…

“Subject’s condition stable” He pondered over what was written in the report….

After all he is my subject… I can never go wrong…

Green wondered what he was supposed to do once the subject woke up. Dr. Moxon was master minding all the episodes till now. But the whole credit of the project belonged to Green. It was he who designed the whole thing and programmed the ‘Operation Black Mamba’…

  “Dr. Moxon?”

“Yes, Green. Tell me the good news. Is he awake?” Dr. Moxon’s was anxious when he picked up Green’s call.

“Not yet, sir. But I am sure, it will happen in couple of hours from now.”

“Great! I’ll be there before 8 a.m.… Will talk to you then”

“Professor!” he called out suddenly… “Well…” he was hesitant…

Moxon soon understood what he wanted to ask, without even being said. After all, Green was Moxon’s favourite student back in the university…

Green was a very ambitious and greedy guy… Moxon knew that well. He had chosen him for this project because of that same reason!

“Don’t worry. As I said, once we let the world know about the success of this project, you would become an icon of the century… Your remuneration would be far more that what you could even imagine… Go to the subject Green. I’ll meet you soon.”

Green took one more cup of coffee and sipped it… That’s all I want… I’ll be famous soon…

He walked steadily to his room. He has to make the complete report before 8 a.m. Dr. Moxon was a person who always insisted on complete records. He knew that well…

Besides, Green had never fallen back in Moxon’s evaluation… He opened the doors and let himself inside the room. It was all white inside…

Sila was right. The two guys at the monitoring desk were fast asleep. But there weren’t any computers or monitors on their desk!

How the hell are they monitoring without any computer or laptops? Kevin wondered… Who cares!

Kevin walked straight without waking those guys up, but stopped dead when he saw the huge front door from a distance. He wondered whether there would be security guys standing over there.

The front doors wouldn’t be safe. There will be security guards for sure. I have to find the back door… He finally said to himself! Soon he was running to the opposite side… aimlessly.

Suddenly an old man appeared from nowhere in front of him. He tried to pull himself to a halt to avoid a head on collision. But it was too late! Kevin couldn’t do anything. It was so close to him… he closed his eyes.

But nothing happened… he was not hurt… He didn’t feel the collision either!

Where is it? He wheeled in confusion… and was shocked to see that behind him! It continued moving ahead, as if nothing had happened…

What the hell! Kevin realized that it had passed through him but had not felt that… Is it some kind of light? Or is it just an illusion?

Kevin felt that he would go mad unless someone explained him what was going around…. But it wasn’t the right time to find the answers to his queries. He needed to get back to his place… Kevin sped through that corridor…

Few minutes later he located what he was searching for. He pulled himself to a halt and walked slowly towards that signboard.

Take left and decent through the steps to reach the Vehicle parking zone…  He kept repeating it to himself…

***

“Excuse me, Doc, are you not taking your vehicle?” A young man shouted from behind…

Doctor!!! Oh… yes. A sudden wave of joy passed through Kevin…

“Well, I would walk…” Kevin replied

“Walk!!! It’s damn cold outside and you are not even wearing any sweater, doctor!” He expressed his concern…

“You see, I am quite used with this climate. Moreover, I must rush now. Good day” Kevin was eager to get out of that place.

How rude! The guy thought. Is this the way the doctors over here treat their well wishers!!! Whatever… The young chap shrugged.

“Well sir, if you are leaving then I might ask you to ‘sign off’”

“Sign off!!!” Kevin’s jaws dropped. He didn’t understand what that security person meant by ‘sign off’

Seeing Kevin’s expression, the security person suddenly sensed that he had done something wrong. He worried whether he had offended him by ‘demanding’ that!

After all, he had started working for that hospital only since last week and was not completely aware of the rules and regulations. He was instructed to ensure that every employee signed off before they left the building.

The senior security person had warned him to be extremely polite with the doctors and nurses there. He had also told him that they worked under tremendous pressure and were dangerously short tempered!

Most of the times the doctors here work continuously for weeks… without even taking break!!! So be very polite to them and treat them like kids. These people are notorious for their foul temper! He recollected what his senior manager had told him when he joined there.

May be this guy was one among those. Besides, he had mentioned that he was going for a walk… may be he wanted to get some fresh air or some exercise… He thought. Besides, he had not seen that ‘doctor’ till that day.

He could have been working here continuously since last week! One poor nut case!!! How can these people stay away from family for this long? The security guy wondered.

When the senior security person mentioned that the doctors there worked continuously for weeks, he thought that he was exaggerating things… But just now he had seen one… A living example!

Very weird! He pitied to himself…

“I am sorry sir… Well, I didn’t mean to offend you… but…” He found it hard to express himself. He feared that the ‘nutcase’ doctor would shout at him or even abuse him…

“Sir, you may carry on and…” he paused. “well, walking is a good exercise…” he finished somehow…

He wanted to ask him when he was signing off… but he couldn’t muster enough courage to do so…

Kevin looked at him awestruck. Everything there seemed enigmatic to him right from the moment he gained consciousness. The place, the equipments, the building, the hallway, and everything… everything there seemed bizarre… and now, even the only man to whom he talked proved to be a lunatic.

No doubt, this guy has gone nuts… He thinks I am going to jog in this freaking climate!

He looked at that guy sharply and shrugged “Whatever!!!”

As he looked, Kevin disappeared into the darkness… He let out a deep sigh of relief…
